Ottawa Named The Most Livable City In North America (2026) - But Why?

Ottawa Isn’t Perfect. But There’s a Reason It Was Named the Most Livable City
Ottawa was recently named the Most Livable City in North America for 2026 according to Numbeo’s 2026 Quality of Life Index.
The ranking looks at everyday factors like cost of living, commute times, traffic, safety, pollution, and access to healthcare. In other words, it measures what daily life actually feels like for residents.
When people hear that, they are sometimes surprised.
Because if you live here, you know Ottawa is not perfect.
So why did it rank so high?

But let me explain it in simple terms.
1. The Traffic Is Manageable
I have lived in Montreal, Vancouver, and now Ottawa.
One of the biggest differences is traffic.
In Ottawa, you are usually not sitting in your car for hours every day. Even if you live in the suburbs, commuting is reasonable most of the time. Unless there is a major incident on the 417, you can typically get downtown in about 25 to 35 minutes from areas in the west end.
That is not the case in cities like Vancouver.
Driving from Surrey or White Rock into downtown Vancouver can easily take an hour each way. In Montreal, constant construction and road conditions can make even short drives frustrating.
Ottawa feels simpler to navigate. The roads are more straightforward. You are not constantly rerouting or trying to figure out confusing interchanges.
For families, that matters. Less time commuting means more time at home.
2. Housing Still Feels Possible
Housing costs have increased significantly in Ottawa over the past few years. There is no denying that.
But compared to Toronto or Vancouver, buying a home here still feels realistic for many families.
According to the Ottawa Real Estate Board, the average price for a townhouse in December 2025 was approximately $548,000.
In cities like Vancouver or Toronto, a two storey townhouse with two or three bedrooms, a basement, a yard, and possibly a garage at that price point is extremely rare.
In Ottawa, that type of home is still available in many areas.
Condo buyers also notice a difference. The square footage you get in Ottawa is often much larger than what you would find in larger markets for a similar price.
When I work with relocation clients, this is one of the first things they point out. They feel like they can actually settle into their home instead of just fitting into it.
3. It Is Set Up Well for Families
This is something you notice quickly once you live here.
Parks, schools, libraries, and recreation centres are spread throughout the city. In many neighbourhoods, you can walk to multiple parks within minutes.
When we lived in Vancouver, we had to drive to reach a park with a proper play structure. In Ottawa, I was surprised by how many parks were within walking distance, even in suburban areas.
Ottawa is also working toward what are called 15 minute neighbourhoods. The goal is to make sure daily needs like schools, shops, parks, and services are within about a 15 minute walk or bike ride.
That does not mean everything is outside your door. But it does mean neighbourhoods are designed so daily life feels manageable.
You can go to work, stop for groceries, make dinner, and still have time for your children’s activities without feeling like your entire day was spent in the car.
4. The Job Market Is Stable
Ottawa has a strong public sector presence. Government jobs create stability that many other cities do not have.
There is also a major tech presence, particularly in Kanata, with large tech parks and steady employment opportunities. Healthcare, education, and public services are also major employers.
This mix creates a job market where many people stay long term.
I often work with clients who moved from more expensive cities because they wanted a more sustainable lifestyle. They wanted stable employment and housing that felt achievable.
Ottawa gives many families that opportunity.
5. Access to the Outdoors Is Easy
Ottawa does not have mountains or an ocean.
But it does have rivers, lakes, green space, bike paths, and the Rideau Canal running through the city.
There are kilometres of connected walking and cycling paths. Many run alongside water or through parks.
You do not need to plan a full day trip to get outside. You can go for a walk after dinner or take your kids to a nearby park without much effort.
That daily access to outdoor space changes how life feels here.
So Why Is Ottawa Considered So Livable?
It is not because it is perfect.
Transit has issues. Winters are long. Healthcare access can take time.
But when you look at daily life as a whole, Ottawa offers:
-
Reasonable commute times
-
More attainable housing compared to larger markets
-
Strong job stability
-
Family focused neighbourhoods
-
Accessible green space
For many people, that combination creates a balanced lifestyle.
That is likely why it ranked so high.
Thinking About Moving to Ottawa?
If you and your family are considering a move, choosing the right neighbourhood is one of the most important decisions you will make.
Commute time, school zones, walkability, housing type, and lifestyle priorities all matter. I have helped many families relocate here, and I have also relocated myself. I understand how overwhelming it can feel.
